Amos 5:10Sefaria

Society seals its own downfall when it refuses to accept criticism and pushes away those who try to guide it back to the right path. Without the willingness to accept correction, there is no hope for repair [מלבי״ם]. The individual offering this moral guidance is typically a true prophet, a pious person, or a respected city leader

The primary approach among commentators is that these confrontations take place at the city gates, which serve as the center of justice and the local courts. In this setting, corrupt judges and government officials harbor deep hatred for the prophet who exposes their twisted rulings Alternatively, the location simply represents the public square. This highlights the bold defiance of the wrongdoers, who feel no shame in openly showing their hatred for the one correcting them for all to see

This hostility extends to anyone who speaks with complete honesty, truth, and integrity The reaction to such an honest person goes beyond mere hatred; it turns into a profound disgust and a desire to completely distance themselves from the speaker [מצודת ציון].

There is a clear escalation between these two types of confrontation. The first type of rebuke focuses on matters of justice and social wrongs between people, which is met with hatred. However, the second type of rebuke focuses on spiritual perfection and the Commandments between humanity and God. The reaction to this spiritual guidance is a much harsher sense of disgust. This reveals that the people despised warnings about their duties toward God even more than they hated being called out for their social injustices [מלבי״ם].
