Exodus 27:17Sefaria

The Tabernacle courtyard was a carefully structured space, bounded by a perimeter of wooden pillars that required both aesthetic uniformity and structural endurance. After detailing the layout of the courtyard across its four directions, a final summary unifies the design of these surrounding pillars. Although the curtains and entrance screens were hung differently depending on the side, the pillars themselves were completely identical. Earlier instructions only mentioned the hooks, bands, and copper bases for the northern and southern sides. Therefore, this summary completes the picture, clarifying that the pillars on the eastern and western sides shared the exact same design [רש״י, קאסוטו].

Beyond confirming the uniform layout of the courtyard, this overview introduces a new detail about the pillars that was not mentioned previously. The tops of all the courtyard pillars were overlaid with silver [העמק דבר]. Additionally, the pillars were wrapped with silver bands or rings [ביאור שטיינזלץ, בכור שור]. These rings were positioned at three or four different points along the length of each wooden post [בכור שור].

Unlike the pillars inside the Tabernacle, which were completely covered in metal, the courtyard pillars were largely exposed wood. Because of this, the silver bands served a crucial practical purpose. They clamped the wood tightly together, preventing it from cracking or splitting in the intense heat and dry weather [חזקוני, בכור שור]. Finally, hooks shaped like the Hebrew letter Vav were fixed directly into the wood of each pillar. The surrounding curtains of the courtyard were then suspended from these hooks using attached loops [בכור שור].
