Completing the outer enclosure of the Tabernacle required precise architectural planning to ensure perfect symmetry and proportion. The western boundary of the courtyard served to close off the sacred compound entirely. Like the other sides of the enclosure, this western edge was completely sealed with fabric hangings, continuing the uniform design of the entire structure [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A strict ratio was maintained between the length of these hangings and the pillars that supported them. Spanning a width of fifty cubits, the western boundary was supported by ten pillars, ensuring that exactly one pillar was placed for every five cubits of fabric [רשב״ם].

The measurements of this side reveal the overall proportions of the courtyard, as its width of fifty cubits was exactly half of its total length [אבן עזרא]. These exact dimensions naturally raise the question of where the Tabernacle tent itself was positioned within the enclosed space. One approach explains that the tent was placed to leave a perfectly square open area of fifty by fifty cubits in front of it, facing east. Since the tent was thirty-one cubits long, nineteen cubits of open space remained behind it to the west, extending to the courtyard hangings. This same margin of nineteen empty cubits was also maintained along the northern and southern sides of the tent [בכור שור].

However, another perspective emphasizes that detailing the exact fifty-cubit measurement on each side was not merely about calculating the remaining open space. Rather, it served as an architectural directive to ensure the corners of the courtyard were perfectly square. This guaranteed a uniform width throughout the entire compound, preventing any structural deviation [אבן עזרא].
