Ezekiel 12:25Sefaria

כִּ֣י ׀ אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה אֲדַבֵּר֙ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲדַבֵּ֤ר דָּבָר֙ וְיֵ֣עָשֶׂ֔ה לֹ֥א תִמָּשֵׁ֖ךְ ע֑וֹד כִּ֣י בִימֵיכֶ֞ם בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֗רִי אֲדַבֵּ֤ר דָּבָר֙ וַעֲשִׂיתִ֔יו נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ {פ}

Human predictions often rely on shifting natural patterns, leaving room for error or unexpected changes. Divine prophecy operates on an entirely different level. The primary approach among commentators is that divine warnings of destruction are now moving from a state of patient delay to immediate, absolute certainty. In the past, the people were granted long periods of grace before any harsh decree materialized, but now the reality of impending doom is imminent.

There is a fundamental difference between the forecasts of stargazers or false prophets and a true message from God [מלבי״ם]. Those who look to the stars base their assumptions on natural systems, which are vulnerable to miscalculations and sudden shifts. God, however, is not bound by the rules of nature or the limits of time. When He speaks, His very speech and divine decree are the actions that bring reality into existence.

The narrative transitions from a passive description of events unfolding to an active declaration that God Himself is the one acting [רד״ק]. This shift serves a crucial purpose: it strips away the comforting illusion that disasters are merely the result of blind chance or bad luck. Instead, it makes it clear that God is personally executing the events exactly as He predicted. The focus is entirely on the impending divine decree hanging over the people [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

Historically, God extends immense patience, deliberately holding back punishment to give the people ample time to recognize their wrongs and change their ways [מלבי״ם]. The concept of delaying a decree is deeply rooted in this divine mercy [מצודת ציון, רש״י]. Yet, the current generation has proven to be entirely rebellious. Because their sins have accumulated to a point where there is no longer any hope for their correction, the era of patience has ended. The judgment will unfold during their own lifetimes, without a single moment of further delay.
