Ezekiel 12:6Sefaria

A prophet is sometimes called upon to become a living mirror for his people, physically acting out the painful realities of their future. In a dramatic display, the prophet is instructed to pack his belongings and leave his home under the cover of darkness, simulating the harsh and humiliating experience of forced exile. This performance is meant to reflect the unknown future of the nation and the deep degradation of being uprooted.

The primary approach among commentators is that the instruction to carry items on the shoulder refers directly to bearing the tools and belongings typical of a refugee. This departure must happen in total darkness. The prophet is to set out just as night falls, without a candle or any source of light, mimicking the desperate flight of exiles escaping into the unknown.

Furthermore, the prophet is told to cover his face. This gesture captures the profound shame experienced by someone driven from their home. An exile naturally fears being recognized and feels deeply embarrassed to show their face in public Because his face is covered, his field of vision is restricted, physically preventing him from seeing the ground he walks on

Beyond the simple physical limitation of not being able to see the path, this act of hiding the face and refusing to look at the land carries a deeper meaning. It symbolizes the overwhelming shame of abandoning one's homeland [רד״ק]. The entire performance is designed as a powerful warning sign and example. By watching the prophet behave exactly like a fleeing refugee, the Israelites are given a clear picture of their own destiny. They are shown that they too will soon face exile and be forced to endure the very same humiliation.
