אֱמֹ֖ר אֲנִ֣י מֽוֹפֶתְכֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֗יתִי כֵּ֚ן יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה לָהֶ֔ם בַּגּוֹלָ֥ה בַשְּׁבִ֖י יֵלֵֽכוּ׃

Prophets often use their own lives to act out God's messages, making the future real for the people watching. By taking on the role of a living example, the prophet serves as a clear sign of the exact fate awaiting the residents of Jerusalem. Once these events unfold, the fulfillment of his warning will stand as undeniable proof that his prophecy was true [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Just as he acts the part of someone being taken away, the same reality will soon strike the nation. This upcoming displacement will not be a matter of choice, but rather a situation forced upon the people completely against their will [רד״ק]. Furthermore, these actions are not just a general warning; they parallel exact historical events. The prophet acts out the experience of exile three distinct times. These represent the two waves of exile that have already struck the nation, while the third action—packing his bags and leaving—points directly to the final, looming captivity that will happen during the reign of Zedekiah [מלבי״ם].

The punishment awaiting the people is exceptionally severe, combining two different forms of suffering. There is a distinct difference between simply being an exile and being a captive. An exile is forced to leave their homeland but might still walk freely and choose where to live in a foreign country. A captive, however, is a prisoner, stripped of all personal freedom and locked away without the ability to return home. The people will suffer this harsh double tragedy: they will be torn from their land and also held as absolute prisoners [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
