A righteous parent does not guarantee a righteous child. A son can choose a path completely opposite to the one paved by his father. The primary approach among commentators is that the son in this scenario completely abandons the positive customs, good deeds, and merits that defined his father's life.

His rebellion does not stop at mere neglect. There is a sharp escalation in his behavior. It is not enough for him to simply avoid doing good; he actively does the exact opposite, making a deliberate choice to engage in evil [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. This active pursuit of sin takes a very physical form. One prominent example of his wrongdoing is his active participation in idol worship. He takes part in these forbidden practices by eating from the sacrifices offered to false gods on the mountaintops [מצודת דוד].
