יחזקאל, פרק י״ח, פסוק ט׳

Ezekiel 18:9Sefaria

A life of genuine righteousness is defined by an active, comprehensive commitment to God's instructions. A person who achieves this moral standard faithfully observes divine decrees and actively avoids sin, embodying a living summary of all prescribed laws and ethical practices [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

These divine instructions are understood through different lenses. One approach divides them by areas of life, distinguishing between the commandments that dictate the relationship between a person and God, and the ethical responsibilities that govern interactions between fellow human beings [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective focuses on the inherent nature of the commands. Certain decrees lack a known logical explanation. A righteous individual observes these faithfully, even when faced with spiritual accusation or mockery [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this obedience is entirely self-motivated, driven by a pure, personal desire to bring joy to the Creator [חומת אנך].

When upholding justice, the righteous person operates with complete integrity. Justice is never pursued out of personal vindictiveness or driven by hidden motives, but is maintained solely to achieve what is true and proper [מצודת דוד]. Additionally, the commitment to these commands involves a profound sense of anticipation. The righteous person actively waits for opportunities to fulfill God's will. Because of this eager expectation, it is considered as if they have fulfilled every commandment, aligning perfectly with the ultimate truth, which represents the entirety of the Torah [חומת אנך].

Ultimately, a person who lives in this manner earns the distinction of being truly righteous. This title is not awarded merely for good intentions or mental readiness, but is earned through concrete actions and actual deeds [מלבי״ם]. As a result of this active commitment, strict justice dictates a profound reward. Such an individual is guaranteed true life, meriting existence both in the present physical world and eternally in the spiritual realm of souls [מצודת דוד].
