יחזקאל, פרק ל״ג, פסוק י״א

Ezekiel 33:11Sefaria

אֱמֹ֨ר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם חַי־אָ֣נִי ׀ נְאֻ֣ם ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה אִם־אֶחְפֹּץ֙ בְּמ֣וֹת הָרָשָׁ֔ע כִּ֣י אִם־בְּשׁ֥וּב רָשָׁ֛ע מִדַּרְכּ֖וֹ וְחָיָ֑ה שׁ֣וּבוּ שׁ֜וּבוּ מִדַּרְכֵיכֶ֧ם הָרָעִ֛ים וְלָ֥מָּה תָמ֖וּתוּ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

God takes a solemn oath to clarify His true attitude toward those who do wrong and the actual purpose of punishment in the world. Unlike a human ruler who might punish his subjects out of anger or a need for revenge when his orders are ignored, God only wants His creations to correct their mistakes and live [מלבי״ם]. By swearing on His own life, God strongly emphasizes that He has absolutely no desire or intention for a sinner to die [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When punishment does occur, it is never an act of revenge. Instead, it serves as a wake-up call, urging the person to abandon their harmful path and return to a life of goodness [מצודת דוד].

This divine desire for repentance extends even beyond the individual facing judgment. [מלבי״ם] explains that sometimes, even when a severe consequence is finalized for one specific person, the ultimate objective is not the punishment itself. Rather, the hope is that another individual will witness the outcome, take the warning to heart, and choose to change their own ways. In every scenario, God's true goal is always life and healing.

Because this path to correction is always open, a passionate plea is made for people to turn back from their bad choices. Since a person can always repair their life through repentance, there is simply no reason for anyone to face destruction merely because they refuse to fix their behavior [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Falling into sin is never a permanent trap or an unchangeable fate. Every person carries the responsibility, at every moment, to step away from bad choices, change their direction, and actively choose life [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
