Human destiny is never fixed, and no individual is permanently locked into a path of either good or evil. A person's fate shifts the moment they change their behavior [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When someone who has acted wickedly decides to abandon their past and begins to practice justice and righteousness, these new choices become the very source of their survival. They are granted life in the merit of these positive deeds, specifically so they have the opportunity to continue and expand upon the good actions they have just begun [מצודת דוד].
