וְיָב֣וֹאוּ אֵ֠לֶ֠יךָ כִּמְבוֹא־עָ֞ם וְיֵשְׁב֤וּ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ עַמִּ֔י וְשָֽׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ וְאוֹתָ֖ם לֹ֣א יַעֲשׂ֑וּ כִּֽי־עֲגָבִ֤ים בְּפִיהֶם֙ הֵ֣מָּה עֹשִׂ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֥י בִצְעָ֖ם לִבָּ֥ם הֹלֵֽךְ׃

Large crowds often gather around spiritual leaders, projecting an image of deep devotion and attentiveness. Yet, outward appearances can mask a profound internal disconnect. God reveals to the prophet the striking contrast between the respectful physical presence of the people and their cynical, materialistic inner thoughts, exposing what they truly say behind his back.

The people arrive in a massive public assembly, sitting before the prophet as if they are truly God's devoted followers. Outwardly, they present themselves as eager students who are anxious to hear the word of God and desire His guidance [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. However, despite listening to the message, they have absolutely no intention of accepting the teachings or putting them into practice.

The real reason for their attendance is far from a desire for repentance. The primary approach among commentators is that the people respond to the prophet with mockery, laughter, and joking, effectively turning his profound message into a mere punchline. Building on this, [רש״י] notes that their behavior reflects a view of the prophet's words as nothing more than entertainment and amusement, akin to listening to a musical instrument. Another perspective suggests their conversations are instead driven by base lusts, focusing on gossip and physical desires [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In either case, the gathering serves only as a source of amusement rather than spiritual growth.

While their outward speech is filled with mockery or distraction, their inner thoughts are entirely consumed by selfish pursuits. Commentators offer different perspectives on the exact nature of these internal desires. Some explain that the people harbor a deep inner drive to simply continue the clowning and mockery that they so enjoy [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Conversely, others understand their hidden focus to be strictly financial, interpreting their thoughts as being consumed by money, theft, and illegal wealth [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, as they sit respectfully in front of the prophet, their minds remain entirely focused on their own material desires and economic gains, completely ignoring the spiritual message being delivered.
