In a powerful prophetic vision, a hidden inner chamber within the Temple compound is exposed, revealing a disturbing scene of mass idolatry. Passing through an entranceway, the prophet steps into this secret room [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The walls of the chamber are completely covered with prohibited images used for worship. Engraved upon the walls are figures representing every species of animal [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Among these are small, short-legged creeping creatures whose movement is barely noticeable, as well as abominable beasts resembling insects and reptiles [מצודת ציון]. These images were intentionally designed and crafted specifically for the purpose of idolatrous worship [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
Alongside these creatures are all the other idols worshipped by the Israelites [מצודת דוד], which some identify specifically as the idols of the Chaldeans [רד״ק]. These idolatrous drawings and reliefs are deeply engraved into the walls [רש״י, מצודת ציון], surrounding the chamber from every possible direction [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The placement of these images is highly personalized; each person present in the room stands surrounded by engravings of the specific idols they choose to worship [מלבי״ם].
