Ezekiel 8:18Sefaria

When a nation abandons its spiritual foundation, the divine response often mirrors its own rebellious choices. God's reaction to the people's deep betrayal operates on a strict principle of measure for measure, where the impending punishment perfectly reflects their own actions and arrogant statements. The commentators agree that just as the people acted with blatant disregard for what is right, God will respond in kind. He will act against them with deep anger, entirely withholding His usual mercy.

This precise parallel between their sins and their punishment plays out in specific ways [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God declares He will act in wrath because the people intentionally provoked Him. Furthermore, He states that He will show no pity, which serves as a direct response to their claim that God does not see their actions. To their related accusation that God has completely abandoned the land, He replies that He will offer no compassion.

The consequences of this severed relationship reach a tragic climax. When the time of disaster and ultimate judgment finally arrives, the people will desperately seek salvation. They will cry out to God loudly, but their prayers will go unanswered. God will stand firm in His refusal and will not listen to their pleas
