Ezekiel 8:12Sefaria

Human beings often fall into the trap of believing they can hide their wrongdoings, driven by flawed beliefs that ultimately lead to spiritual ruin. The leadership of the nation is caught engaging in severe idolatry, prompting God to draw the prophet's attention to the sheer magnitude of their shameful behavior. Out of fear of human judgment and deep embarrassment, the elders retreat to the dark to perform their rituals in secret. Yet, God deliberately exposes their hidden disgrace to the prophet, ensuring their sins are brought into the light

The elders retreat to concealed inner chambers, which are understood in two distinct ways. Some explain these as secret, marble-paved vaults, much like the hidden rooms constructed to conceal physical treasures Others understand these spaces not merely as hiding spots, but as highly decorated sanctuaries. In this view, the rooms are adorned with physical paintings and images designed to represent and honor the spiritual forces and heavenly bodies they are actively worshipping

The root of their behavior lies in a deep theological error. They claim that God no longer sees them and has abandoned the earth. The primary approach among commentators is that these elders do not deny God's actual existence; rather, they deny His active involvement in the physical world. They believe God has withdrawn His presence from the earth, choosing to oversee only the upper spiritual realms and the angels. According to this worldview, God has handed control of the lower world over to the stars and heavenly systems. Convinced that the earth is now managed by these celestial forces, the elders feel compelled to worship them, believing they must appease the powers that actually govern their daily lives

Ultimately, the elders operate under the illusion that the darkness provides them with a perfect cover. However, the prophet shatters this misconception, making it clear that despite their deepest efforts to conceal themselves, their actions remain completely exposed and visible before God [רד״ק].
