כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֤י כַשַּׁ֙חַל֙ לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם וְכַכְּפִ֖יר לְבֵ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה אֲנִ֨י אֲנִ֤י אֶטְרֹף֙ וְאֵלֵ֔ךְ אֶשָּׂ֖א וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃

Relying on foreign powers and diplomacy to solve national crises is completely ineffective when the disaster originates from God Himself. The punishment now reaches a new level of severity. Earlier, God's judgment operated like a moth, working slowly and secretly from within. Now, He reveals Himself as a predator attacking openly from the outside, inflicting a wound that no one can heal [אבן עזרא].

To illustrate this, God compares Himself to two distinct types of lions [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. This reflects the different ways He strikes the two divided kingdoms [מלבי״ם]. One type is a young lion that waits in ambush and remains inside its den. The other is a mature lion that leaves its territory to hunt, carrying its prey away from a distance. When striking the kingdom of Ephraim, God acts like the mature lion, traveling from His place in Zion to attack them from afar. Conversely, against the kingdom of Judah, He acts like the young lion, striking them directly from within His own dwelling place among them [מלבי״ם].

To remove any doubt, it is emphasized that God alone is the source of this ruin. The disaster is not a random accident or a natural occurrence, but the result of His direct intervention [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. The destruction unfolds in calculated stages. First, God strikes and walks away with the prey, and then He carries it far away [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the initial attack represents the physical killing itself, while carrying the prey away symbolizes the ultimate punishment of exile [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the blow is absolute. Because the judgment comes directly from God, no human strength or military alliance can possibly intervene or offer rescue [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].
