Attempts to rebuild a relationship with God are ultimately rejected when they happen too late or lack genuine intention. After a long period of spiritual distance, the people try to reconnect with their Creator through grand, outward gestures of worship, bringing massive flocks of sheep and cattle as offerings to the Temple [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. However, instead of finding forgiveness, they are met with absolute silence and distance.
The primary approach among commentators is that this reality is directed specifically at the Kingdom of Judah, as the Temple was located within their borders [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Historically, this aligns with the reign of King Josiah, who actively destroyed idol worship and led a massive movement to return to God at the Temple. Yet, despite this national awakening, the divine decree for Judah's destruction had already been sealed, making their sudden pleas ineffective [רד״ק]. Another aspect of this era was the removal of border guards who had previously blocked travel to Jerusalem. With the roads open, massive crowds were finally able to journey to the Temple Mount to seek God [מלבי״ם].
Despite the impressive display of animal sacrifices, these offerings completely failed to clear away their sins. For a sacrifice to bring atonement, it must be paired with honest confession and sincere repentance. The people of Judah brought their offerings to God, but they stubbornly refused to admit their wrongs or confess their sins. Because they held onto their impurity, their sacrifices lost all value [חומת אנך].
Seeking God strictly through external rituals is a hollow effort. God does not merely reside within the stone walls of the Temple; His true dwelling place is within the heart of the nation. When the people fail to make themselves holy on the inside, no amount of outward sacrifice can help them find Him [מלבי״ם], especially after they have so deeply betrayed Him [אבן עזרא]. Because of this betrayal, a total separation has taken place. The glory of God and His Divine Presence have slipped away, completely detaching and distancing from the people [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
