Prolonged immersion in wrongdoing creates a deep spiritual and psychological barrier. When a person becomes fully entrenched in a corrupt lifestyle, it ultimately destroys their inner ability to feel regret and change course.

There are two complementary ways to understand how this trap operates. One approach suggests that the wrongdoers themselves simply refuse to abandon their destructive habits to return to God [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. A deeper perspective views the actions themselves as an active, binding force. By repeatedly engaging in wrongdoing, people create a reality where their own past deeds actively block any path to repentance. They become so firmly attached to their sins that even if a passing thought of returning to God enters their minds, they immediately reject it [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The root cause of this spiritual dead end is a destructive internal drive, described as an urge for idolatry, heresy, and lust, which completely misleads and pollutes them [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When a person sins and fails to quickly seek forgiveness, a spark of wickedness takes root within them. This corrupting spirit drives away all holiness and drags the individual into an endless cycle of further offenses [חומת אנך].

Consumed by this destructive internal force, these individuals lose all connection to God. They no longer seek Him out or even desire to know Him, remaining completely attached to evil [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Once they reach this hardened state, words of rebuke and moral guidance can no longer reach them or offer any help [מלבי״ם].
