הושע, פרק ח׳, פסוק ו׳

Hosea 8:6Sefaria

The worship of the calf in Samaria highlights the deep absurdity of idolatry. Rather than a heavenly being, the idol is nothing more than an inferior human invention destined for a humiliating end.

The concept of this idol was not learned from foreign nations, but was born entirely from within the Israelites themselves, acting as a direct continuation of the first golden calf made in the desert [רש״י, רד״ק]. The idol was conceived through the combined plans of the people and their king [אבן עזרא], and it was funded completely by their own silver and gold [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. A human craftsman simply built it with his own hands [מצודת ציון]. Because the calf is entirely a human product, created without any heavenly miracles, it is clearly not a god. It makes no sense for a handmade object to possess any power or hold any control over the very person who created it [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The final fate of this idol further exposes its uselessness. The primary approach among commentators is that the calf will eventually be smashed into tiny splinters and broken pieces. An invading enemy will shatter the idol to loot its gold plating. This physical destruction serves as the ultimate proof of its emptiness; an idol that cannot even protect itself from being broken certainly has no power to save those who worship it [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond this physical breaking, there is a deeper psychological reason behind the worship of the calf. The Israelites actually know perfectly well that the idol is not a real god. Instead, their choice to worship it is driven by a desire for wildness and a rejection of authority. The idolatry serves as a convenient excuse to throw off the burden of God's Commandments, allowing the people to live lawless lives exactly as they please [מלבי״ם].
