זִבְחֵ֣י הַבְהָבַ֗י יִזְבְּח֤וּ בָשָׂר֙ וַיֹּאכֵ֔לוּ יְהֹוָ֖ה לֹ֣א רָצָ֑ם עַתָּ֞ה יִזְכֹּ֤ר עֲוֺנָם֙ וְיִפְקֹ֣ד חַטֹּאותָ֔ם הֵ֖מָּה מִצְרַ֥יִם יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃

Religious rituals offer no shield for moral and spiritual corruption. When a society's actions become deeply flawed, its sacred ceremonies lose all meaning and hollow out from within. This warning is directed not only at the northern tribes but also at the people of Judah, who began copying these sinful behaviors. They held onto a false sense of security, believing that simply bringing offerings to the Temple would guarantee their safety [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

The nature of these specific offerings can be understood in a few ways. The primary approach among commentators is that they are burnt offerings, meant to be entirely consumed by fire on the altar. Others view them simply as gifts that the people mistakenly think they are generously handing over to God [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. Taking a more social perspective, some explain that these animals were actually acquired through robbery and oppression, making the very act of offering them corrupt [רד״ק בשם תרגום יונתן].

Because these offerings are tainted, God rejects them, stripping the act of any spiritual value. Since the ritual achieves nothing in heaven, the commentators note that the people might as well just slaughter the animals to eat the meat for their own dinner [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A more severe perspective suggests that the people are actually profaning the sacred offerings on purpose. They treat the holy meat as ordinary food and eat it themselves, driven by a heretical belief that God ignores their actions and has no interest in their rituals anyway [מלבי״ם].

Consequently, the time for accountability has arrived. The prophetic warning emphasizes that God will very soon bring them to justice and punish their continuous sins [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

The ultimate consequence of their actions is a return to Egypt. Most commentators understand this as a physical reality: in the wake of destruction and exile, the people will flee back to Egypt, acting in direct defiance of God's ancient command never to return there [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Beyond the physical escape, this journey carries a profound spiritual tragedy. Returning to Egypt represents a complete undoing of their historical redemption. It is a severe regression, plunging the nation back to its original, unredeemed state as idolaters, long before they ever received the Torah and its commandments [מלבי״ם].
