Hosea 8:7Sefaria

Empty and negative actions inevitably bring about destructive consequences. This reality is illustrated through the agricultural imagery of a farmer engaged in a completely pointless cycle of planting and harvesting. When people invest their energy into meaningless pursuits, they do not merely walk away empty-handed; they invite a disaster far worse than what they initially created. The process begins with individuals toiling in vain, pouring their labor into something that has no actual substance, much like a person trying to plant the wind The natural result they receive perfectly matches their actions, but with a terrifying escalation. Instead of a simple breeze, they face a severe and destructive storm that is vastly more powerful than the wind they originally planted

The imagery then shifts to the failure of the crops themselves. Normally, a farmer looks forward to the final stage of growth, when the ripe grain stands tall in the field, ready to be harvested and enjoyed However, the result of these empty actions is a complete lack of success; the efforts will yield absolutely no fruit Even if a small amount of growth manages to occur, the stalks will remain completely empty and incapable of producing any usable flour

The ultimate sense of futility is realized in the final outcome of whatever little might be produced. The primary approach among commentators is that even if these efforts somehow find minor success and result in the accumulation of wealth or assets, the creators will never get to enjoy them. Instead, foreign enemies will invade and plunder everything they have gathered Taking a different perspective, [מלבי״ם] suggests that these enemies will not even wait for the crops to mature. The moment the plant sprouts, the invaders will destroy it immediately. Driven by the mere suspicion that the crop might eventually produce something of value, they will eliminate it entirely, leaving it with absolutely no chance to grow.
