II Chronicles 1:7Sefaria

Following a public offering of sacrifices, the young king experiences an extraordinary divine revelation where he is granted a limitless choice. That very night, God appears to Solomon in a prophetic vision [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God presents an open invitation, telling the king to ask for anything he desires, with the absolute guarantee that the request will be granted [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While this profound encounter is also recorded in the Book of Kings, its repetition here serves to complete the story and explain new aspects. The narrative style of the Book of Chronicles generally condenses details that have already been shared, choosing instead to expand on elements that offer a fresh understanding of the event [מלבי״ם]. Consequently, the dialogue between God and Solomon is presented much more concisely here, placing a sharper focus on the true purpose of the monarchy.

God's offer and Solomon's subsequent response strike at the very heart of the royal role. In order for God's promise to David to be completely fulfilled and for Solomon to rule successfully, the new king must be capable of executing justice and guiding the nation. Recognizing this immense responsibility, Solomon understands that he must ask for precise spiritual and intellectual tools. He requires wisdom, which is the understanding of the laws of justice and the difference between good and evil, a gift that can only be received directly from God. Alongside this, he needs practical knowledge, the intellectual ability to clearly distinguish between truth and falsehood in everyday reality, an essential skill for resolving disputes among the people [מלבי״ם].
