II Chronicles 1:3Sefaria

King Solomon's journey to Gibeon with the entire assembly of Israel marks a profound transition in the spiritual history of the nation. It represents the exact moment where the ancient legacy of the desert meets the dawn of a new, permanent spiritual center in Jerusalem. The narrative moves swiftly, bypassing any mention of the king issuing a formal command or invitation to the people. Instead, it immediately presents the action of the nation walking together. This concise storytelling focuses directly on the final outcome rather than detailing the intermediate steps of the gathering [רש״י].

Their destination was the original Tabernacle crafted by Moses in the desert. This historical structure had stood in Shiloh for an extended period before eventually being relocated to the high place in Gibeon [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This massive gathering was not organized for routine offerings. Solomon assembled the nation's leaders with a broader historical and legal purpose in mind: the final dismantling of the Tabernacle in Gibeon. The king recognized a fundamental flaw in offering sacrifices at various high places while the original Tabernacle remained standing elsewhere. Furthermore, he wished to spare the people the ongoing burden of traveling to Gibeon. The extraordinary number of sacrifices offered that day served as a grand, festive farewell. Solomon was paying his final respects to the ancient Tabernacle and the copper altar before they were moved to Jerusalem. There, they would finally be reunited with the Ark of the Covenant, which King David had previously brought to the city [מלבי״ם].
