Solomon turns to God seeking the realization of the divine promise granted to his father, David. Recognizing the immense weight of guiding a vast nation, he uses this heavy responsibility as the foundation for his appeal. He asks that God's earlier word to David be fully validated, established, and brought to life [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His plea is for the kingship to remain secure and firmly rooted in his own hands [מצודת דוד].

To justify this request, Solomon points to the sheer magnitude of the population God has placed under his rule. This vast multitude represents the entire nation of Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By highlighting the enormous size of the nation, he emphasizes that the daily affairs, needs, and challenges of the citizens are incredibly numerous and highly complex [מצודת דוד].

Leading such a massive nation is no simple task. It demands exceptional wisdom and strength to properly guide the people and manage their conflicts. Realizing this, Solomon determines that when God offers him the chance to ask for anything his heart desires, he must prioritize the one tool most essential for his duties. Therefore, he asks specifically for the wisdom of leadership [רש״י].
