King Asa’s military forces were divided into two main divisions, drawing from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Each group brought its own unique combat specialty and weaponry to the battlefield. The soldiers of Judah carried large, encompassing shields designed to protect the warriors against enemy swords and spears, and they were also armed with their own spears [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast, the troops from the tribe of Benjamin carried a distinct type of shield specifically made to defend against incoming arrows [מלבי״ם]. The men of Benjamin had a long-standing historical reputation as highly skilled archers, and during this period, their tribe had grown and developed significantly [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To achieve maximum range and power with their weapons, these archers used a specific physical technique. By stepping on the bow with their foot, they could pull the string back tightly, allowing them to shoot arrows over great distances [מצודת ציון].
