The end of Ahaz's reign is marked by his passing and burial within the city of Jerusalem, yet his final resting place carries a deliberate mark of disgrace. Commentators agree that because of his profound wickedness, he was intentionally excluded from the main royal cemetery. His actions made him completely unworthy to lie in rest beside the other monarchs.

Although Ahaz was a king of Judah, the royal burial grounds from which he was banned were known as the tombs of the kings of Israel. This broader, national title is used because David and Solomon, who ruled over the entire united nation, were buried in that very same estate. Since those founding monarchs were laid to rest there, the entire cemetery was named in their honor [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].
