The response to the call to action is driven directly by the heads of the Levite families. The leaders of the tribe step forward to act as the official representatives for the three central branches of their people. From the Kohath family, Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah rise to the occasion. They are joined by Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel, who represent the Merari family. Finally, from the Gershon family, Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah take their places to lead the effort [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
