Upon ascending to the throne, King Hezekiah takes immediate action to renew the service in the Temple [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific timing of these events holds a unique significance. Although the king refers to this period as the first month of his reign, he had actually declared a leap year by adding an extra month. Therefore, based on his own calculation, this was technically the month of Adar [מלבי״ם].
The new king's very first act is to open the doors of the House of God. The primary approach among commentators is that this step was necessary because his father, King Ahaz, had deliberately closed and locked the doors during his own rule. Once the doors are open, Hezekiah focuses on restoring the area, repairing the doors through physical construction [מצודת דוד]. This extensive restoration is essential because the previous king had vandalized and cut apart all the sacred vessels [רש״י]. Ultimately, the site had fallen into complete ruin during a time when the nation turned its back on the Temple of God [מלבי״ם].
