II Chronicles 29:34Sefaria

The renewal of the Temple service during King Hezekiah's reign brought a sudden wave of sacrifices from the people, creating a severe manpower shortage. There were simply not enough priests who had completed their purification process in time to handle the overwhelming workload of that day [רש"י, מלבי"ם]. Specifically, the priests were unable to keep up with the demanding task of removing the skin from all the offerings [מצודת ציון]. To resolve this crisis, the Levites stepped in to assist with the flaying [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. While tasks following the collection of the sacrifice's blood are generally reserved exclusively for priests, the emergency nature of the situation permitted this exception [רד"ק]. This historical event establishes the practical law that flaying an offering does not strictly require a priest [רלב"ג].

The Levites continued their work without pause until the entire task was complete and a sufficient number of priests had finished their purification to take over the service [מצודת דוד]. By stepping in so willingly, the Levites also served as a motivating force, encouraging and urging the remaining priests to hurry and purify themselves [רד"ק].

This shift in responsibilities exposes a profound spiritual gap between the two tribes, explaining why the Levites were prepared for the service before the priests. The primary approach among commentators is that the Levites demonstrated far more enthusiasm, energy, and swiftness in answering Hezekiah's call to purify themselves, whereas the priests were sluggish and merely followed along. The Levites possessed a natural fear of God and a distinct separation from physical desires [מלבי"ם].

Beyond mere enthusiasm versus laziness, there is a deeper historical context to this disparity. During the reigns of previous wicked kings, such as Ahaz, those who truly feared God were forced into hiding. When Hezekiah took the throne, it took time for these righteous individuals to emerge and undergo gradual purification [רש"י]. Furthermore, many priests had actively participated in idol worship under the former regimes, leaving the Levites spiritually cleaner and more appropriate for the sacred work [רלב"ג]. Finally, some priests were physically unable to purify themselves because they had contracted ritual impurity born from sinful thoughts. The Levites, possessing upright hearts, carefully guarded their minds and avoided such impurity, allowing them to step forward when they were needed most [רלב"ג].
