II Chronicles 35:5Sefaria

Preparing for a massive national event like the Passover sacrifice required extraordinary order and meticulous organization. With thousands of people and Temple servants gathering, avoiding chaos was essential to ensure the sacred duties were carried out properly.

To manage the vast crowds, everyone was instructed to stand in the Temple courtyard [מצודת דוד] in highly organized, separate groups [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary goal of this careful division was to guarantee that the Passover sacrifice was performed flawlessly, exactly as God had commanded through Moses [רש"י]. This organizational structure applied to all who were present. The Israelites were grouped and separated according to their specific extended families. Alongside them, the Levites were commanded to arrange themselves in the exact same manner, divided strictly by their own family households [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When looking at how the Levites and the Israelites worked together within this structured system, commentators offer two distinct perspectives. One approach focuses on the practical necessity of the arrangement. Because of the massive number of people bringing sacrifices, a single Levite family could never manage the immense workload alone. Therefore, the Levites were spread out, each standing at his specific station to assist the Israelites with the demanding process [רלב"ג]. Another approach suggests a much more precise and personalized system. In this view, there was a direct parallel between the groups: for every single Israelite family, a corresponding Levite family was specifically assigned to prepare and perform the sacrificial duties exclusively for them [מלבי"ם].
