As the time for the Passover sacrifice approaches, the Levites receive instructions that demand a dual level of readiness, focusing on both personal and communal responsibilities. Before they can assist others, their first duty is to look inward. They must purify and ready themselves for the sacred work ahead [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Once their personal readiness is established, a broader responsibility falls upon them to prepare their brethren. Commentators offer two distinct views on the identity of these brethren and the exact nature of this preparation. One perspective suggests that the Levites are tasked with guiding the rest of the nation. They must urge their fellow Israelites to undergo their own purification process, ensuring the entire community can fulfill the Passover duties exactly as God commanded [מצודת דוד].

Another approach understands this brotherhood more narrowly, pointing specifically to the Priests. In this view, the preparation is not about spiritual encouragement, but rather practical, hands-on assistance. The Levites are instructed to help the Priests with the physical labor of the sacrifices, such as flaying the animal skins and organizing all necessary materials, so the Priests can properly complete their designated tasks [רלב״ג].
