II Chronicles 9:25Sefaria

King Solomon's immense military and economic power was clearly visible in the massive cavalry and chariot forces he built. To support such an enormous military machine, he established a vast logistical network and strategically distributed his troops throughout his kingdom.

The infrastructure for these animals included dedicated stables [ביאור שטיינזלץ] or feeding troughs [מצודת ציון]. While the record notes the existence of four thousand such structures, this number appears to conflict with another biblical account mentioning forty thousand. Commentators resolve this discrepancy in different ways. One approach suggests a structural layout: there were four thousand large stable buildings, and each contained ten rooms or held ten horses, bringing the total capacity to forty thousand Another perspective proposes that these numbers should be multiplied by one another, meaning there were either forty thousand stables holding four thousand horses each, or four thousand stables holding forty thousand horses each [רד״ק, מנחת שי].

Managing such a vast force required careful deployment. Solomon divided his army, stationing a portion of his chariots and cavalry in designated chariot cities across the land, while keeping the rest stationed close to him in Jerusalem This strategic division was implemented to maintain organization and order, and to prevent incidents of looting [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite the glory and power reflected in this vast military expansion, the unprecedented buildup was not without criticism. By accumulating such a massive number of horses and chariots, King Solomon violated an explicit commandment in the Torah regarding the laws of kingship, which strictly forbids a king from acquiring an excessive number of horses [רש״י].
