II Kings 17:19Sefaria

The negative influence of the Kingdom of Israel eventually seeped into the Kingdom of Judah, creating a complex spiritual reality for the entire nation. Even though the spiritual condition of Judah was generally better than that of Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ], they ultimately succumbed to sin and failed to keep the commandments of God [מצודת דוד]. Rather than maintaining their distinct devotion, the people of Judah adopted the corrupt customs and laws that the people of Israel had invented and established [מצודת דוד].

This dangerous downward spiral led to a critical turning point. God saw that if the Kingdom of Israel remained on its land, its toxic influence would eventually corrupt the Kingdom of Judah completely [מלבי״ם].

Since Judah also participated in these sins, a natural question arises as to why they were not exiled at the same time. Several factors spared them from sharing the immediate fate of Israel [אברבנאל]. First, the physical presence of the Temple within their borders served as a spiritual shield. Additionally, unlike the consistently wicked rulers of Israel, the kings of Judah were not uniformly corrupt. The downfall of the Kingdom of Israel occurred specifically during the reign of King Hezekiah, a deeply righteous leader whose personal merit provided a protective layer over Jerusalem.

Beyond these protective elements, there was a profound educational purpose in separating the punishments of the two kingdoms. God brought destruction upon Israel first so that the inhabitants of Judah would clearly witness the devastating consequences of their shared behavior. The intention was that seeing this ruin would awaken them to repentance, prompting them to remove idolatry from their midst and thereby save themselves from suffering the exact same fate [אברבנאל].
