Facing a battle on two simultaneous fronts, the commanders must devise a strategy that accounts for the unpredictable nature of war. Joab and Abishai establish a pact of mutual assistance. Rather than simply dividing their forces and fighting independently, they agree to act as a support system for one another. The military strategy dictates that if either brother finds himself overwhelmed on his respective battlefield, the other will bring his troops to provide crucial reinforcements [שטיינזלץ].

While this agreement prepares them for two potential scenarios where one front falters, it presents a logical difficulty. A third possibility exists: the Arameans could overpower Joab at the exact same time the Ammonites overpower Abishai. In such a case, neither brother would be available to rescue the other. Addressing this worst-case scenario, Joab makes it clear that if both fronts face collapse, their duty is simply to fight with absolute courage for their people and their cities. They are not to rely on a miracle, but rather to fulfill their military responsibility and leave the final outcome entirely to God, trusting Him to do what He deems best [אברבנאל].
