שמואל ב, פרק י׳, פסוק י׳

II Samuel 10:10Sefaria

Preparing for a war on two fronts requires careful strategy and the division of military strength. Facing enemies from different directions, a commander must secure his vulnerabilities while attacking the primary threat.

Joab splits his army to manage this dual conflict. While directing his main strike force against the Arameans, he takes the remaining soldiers and places them under the command of his brother. This secondary unit serves as a blocking force against the Ammonites. Joab is not particularly afraid of the Ammonite army, but he understands the tactical danger of leaving his rear exposed. If he commits all his troops to fighting the Arameans, the Ammonites could easily attack him from behind. Therefore, he positions his brother's unit to pin the Ammonites in place and guard that specific front [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The commander of this blocking force, traditionally known as Abishai, has his name recorded here in an unusual, shortened form: Abshai. Throughout the Book of Samuel, this is the only instance where his name is shortened, though this brief spelling is the standard throughout the Book of Chronicles [רד"ק, מנחת שי].

The change is rooted in a deep respect for King David. The commander's mother, Zeruiah, was the daughter of Jesse. The literal meaning of the full name Abishai is "My father is Jesse." Calling him by this complete name could be seen as elevating the nephew to the same level of status as his uncle, King David. Because the Book of Chronicles was written specifically to honor David, it consistently uses the shortened name to avoid this comparison. That same tradition of respect is uniquely reflected in this single moment in the Book of Samuel [מנחת שי בשם רש"י].
