The journey to bring the Ark of the Covenant into the City of David required strict security arrangements to honor God. To uphold this reverence, King David appointed Berechiah and Elkanah to serve as guards at the entrance of the tent where the Ark was placed [רלב״ג]. Their position as gatekeepers was not a new responsibility, as they had guarded the tent in earlier times. They retained this specific title for their guarding duties, even though they later transitioned into roles as singers [מצודת דוד].

Beyond watching over the Ark at its resting place, these men had a vital, practical job during the actual transport. As Levites, they were stationed in close proximity to the Ark [ביאור שטיינזלץ], marching immediately behind it. Throughout the procession, they acted as a physical barrier between the Ark and the large group of Levites following in the rear. This careful positioning guaranteed that no one would accidentally step too close to the Ark while it was in motion [מלבי״ם].
