Bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem required meticulous organization. The Levites were carefully divided into specific musical and logistical roles to ensure the sacred procession was conducted with proper honor. Within this grand arrangement, a specific group of Levites held a unique, dual responsibility while occupying a secondary rank in the overall hierarchy. They served directly under the primary leaders of the singers and gatekeepers. Their position was much like that of a viceroy serving under a king, stepping in to support the main leadership.
Among the individuals listed in this secondary rank is a figure whose identity sparks an interesting discussion. The primary approach among commentators is that one of these Levites was actually named Ben [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. According to [רד״ק], quoting his father, this specific Levite is the famous musician referenced in the Book of Psalms. He is the one who played the music for the psalm David composed to celebrate his victory over Goliath. His name was well known, and he was recognized specifically as this master musician rather than simply being referred to as someone's son. Offering a different perspective, [מלבי״ם] understands the text more literally, reading the sequence not as a distinct name but as a family relationship, identifying the individuals as Zechariah, the son of Jaaziel, along with Jaaziel himself.
Beyond their musical duties, these Levites also carried the responsibility of guarding the gates. This was not a newly assigned task. They had already been serving as gatekeepers for a long time, stretching back to when the Tabernacle and the Ark were stationed in Shiloh, Nob, and Gibeon [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. However, their duties shifted depending on the circumstances of the Ark [רש״י, רד״ק]. While the Ark was actively traveling on the road to Jerusalem, there were no physical gates to guard. Consequently, the gatekeepers were temporarily reassigned to serve entirely as singers for the procession. Once David finally brought the Ark to its resting place in the designated tent, these Levites resumed their original posts, taking on both their guarding and musical responsibilities simultaneously.
