After receiving a prophecy from God that his son, rather than himself, would be the one to build the Temple, David dedicated his energy to preparing the necessary raw materials. He gathered these supplies from the spoils of war taken from Aram [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Specifically, a massive amount of copper was captured from Tibhath and Cun, two wealthy cities known for their extensive commercial activity [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In a parallel historical account found in the Book of Samuel, these same cities are referred to as Betah and Berothai. The primary approach among commentators to explain this difference is that the cities simply had two different names, a common occurrence in biblical history [מצודת ציון, רלב"ג]. Alternatively, some explain that the names of these cities naturally changed over the years leading up to the era of Ezra [מלבי"ם].

The historical record here includes a unique detail not found in the Book of Samuel, noting exactly how Solomon later used this specific copper [מלבי"ם]. The massive metal castings required for the Temple demanded an enormous amount of raw material. Solomon utilized this captured copper to construct the Sea of Copper, a giant water tank, as well as two massive pillars named Jachin and Boaz, each standing over ten meters tall. Additionally, the material was used to craft various copper vessels, including the stands, basins, and other essential tools for the Temple [רלב"ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
