I Chronicles 18:1Sefaria

A profound shift occurs in David's reign following a direct message from God. Once God informed David that his son would be the one to construct the Temple, David dedicated himself to preparing the necessary infrastructure. He wanted to guarantee that when his son was ready to build, everything would be fully organized and available in advance. The historical narrative pivots at this moment to detail how David laid the groundwork for the Temple through military victories, specifically by securing the region and dedicating the spoils of these wars to the future building project [רש״י].

This period marks a complete reversal in the power dynamic between Israel and the Philistines. For a long time, the Philistines had continuously invaded Judah in an attempt to restrict David's movements and limit his authority. Now, the initiative shifts entirely to David. He launches a proactive offensive campaign, securing decisive victories and conquering new territory. Because of this campaign, the Philistines finally cease to be a persistent nuisance or a heavy threat to Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

During this successful offensive, David captures the prominent Philistine city of Gath along with its surrounding dependent villages [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While the parallel historical record in the Book of Samuel notes that David captured a place called Metheg-ammah, this was simply the official name of the larger district that encompassed Gath and its local towns [רלב״ג]. The author of Chronicles chose to clarify this older geographic term by explicitly naming the city of Gath, perfectly aligning with how the Sages traditionally understood the identity of this location [מלבי״ם].
