I Chronicles 18:3Sefaria

A major military clash between David and Hadadezer, the king of a large Aramean state, unfolds amid a broader struggle for regional dominance. David launches a campaign to halt a rising political power that threatens the borders of the land of Israel, ultimately securing his own supreme authority over the entire region.

The battle takes place in Hamath, located in what is today northwestern Syria. Hadadezer is not there by chance; he is in the middle of an aggressive campaign of conquest, actively fighting against the local king of Hamath. Recognizing a strategic opening, David seizes the opportunity to strike his opponent before the Aramean forces can finish their conquests [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

Hadadezer's primary objective is to expand his territory and firmly establish his military power and borders at the Euphrates River. The primary approach among commentators is that David marches out specifically to stop this expansion because the Euphrates is considered the border of the land of Israel. Had the Aramean king succeeded in conquering Hamath and entrenching himself at the Euphrates, he would have posed a direct and imminent threat to the Israelite kingdom [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In a parallel historical account of the event, Hadadezer's mission is framed as an attempt to restore his dominance, rather than simply establish it. These concepts perfectly complement one another. The Aramean king intends to return the surrounding lands to his control and direct his growing forces toward the land of Israel, with the ultimate goal of cementing a permanent and unshakable base of power in the region [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
