The musical system within the Temple was not merely an artistic endeavor, but a profound fusion of musical mastery and divine inspiration. This dynamic is clearly reflected in the family of Jeduthun the Levite, whose sons served as musicians under his direct leadership. For them, playing instruments was a powerful channel for spiritual and prophetic expression.

The historical record names five of Jeduthun's sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah. However, it concludes by stating there were six. This numerical gap invites several intriguing explanations. One tradition suggests that Jeduthun's wife was pregnant at the time, and King David, guided by the Holy Spirit, foresaw that this unborn child would eventually lead a guard in the Temple. This child, Shimei, is counted among the six because of his future destiny [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, Shimei may have already been born but was omitted from the initial list because he had not yet reached the age of thirty. In this scenario, his father performed the Temple service and cast lots on his behalf until he came of age [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective simply notes that Shimei became a fully recognized singer at a later point in time [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The sons did not perform independently but worked intimately alongside their father. This close relationship meant they played their instruments with his direct support [רש״י]. Through his careful guidance and instruction, they acquired the skill and understanding needed to master the harp [מצודת דוד].

Jeduthun's own role was defined by a unique form of prophecy. In this context, prophecy refers to the act of speaking words of gratitude and praise to God while moved by the Holy Spirit [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. Immersed in this elevated spiritual state, the family would play their harps to accompany joyful songs of thanksgiving, offering classic psalms of gratitude and praise to God [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
