I Kings 1:18Sefaria

Bathsheba stands before King David to present a carefully calculated diplomatic and legal argument. She faces the task of informing him about a royal coup unfolding right under his nose, while simultaneously reminding him of his solemn oath to her son Solomon. She must navigate this without accusing David himself of breaking his promise. By emphasizing that David is completely unaware of the situation, she makes it clear that she does not suspect him of violating his oath. She understands that Adonijah's coronation took place entirely without the king's knowledge [מצודת דוד].

Highlighting the king's lack of awareness also exposes the severity of Adonijah's actions. This is a double rebellion: Adonijah is not only attempting to bypass the promise made to Solomon, but he is also claiming the throne while David is still alive. If Adonijah truly believed that his status as the firstborn gave him the right to rule, he would not have hidden his coronation from the king. The very fact that he operated in the shadows proves that he knows his actions are wrong [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, Bathsheba’s approach is designed to preemptively stop David from avoiding involvement. David might have been tempted to argue that what is done is done, or that he is no longer bound by his oath because the people have already chosen Adonijah. To counter this, she stresses that the entire move was orchestrated behind his back, firmly branding Adonijah as a rebel against the crown. She subtly reminds David that the people are still looking to him to reveal his true will. As a result, his oath to Solomon remains valid, and he is obligated to fulfill it. If he fails to act, she and her son will be falsely accused of a crime, which would ultimately lead to a desecration of God's name [צוארי שלל].
