I Kings 1:26Sefaria

Nathan the Prophet presents King David with a glaring and meaningful absence from the feast hosted by Adonijah. By carefully listing the loyalists who were deliberately left off the guest list, Nathan builds a strong logical case to expose Adonijah's true motives. The primary approach among commentators is that the exclusion of these specific individuals serves as absolute proof of a rebellion and an attempt to seize the throne [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. Adonijah had invited all the king's sons to his event. If this gathering had been nothing more than an ordinary feast or a standard sacrifice with no political agenda, he would have naturally invited the rest of the king's inner circle as well. The fact that this particular group was left out clearly shows that the event was entirely about claiming the kingship.

The exact reason for excluding Nathan, Zadok, Benaiah, and Solomon was highly calculated. Adonijah knew ahead of time that these loyal figures would never support or participate in his rebellion [אברבנאל].

Building on this point, Nathan uses this exclusion to raise a powerful rhetorical question to David. By emphasizing his own dedication as well as Solomon's unwavering loyalty to the king, Nathan is making a crucial point: If Adonijah's move to take the crown was actually ordered by David, why would these faithful servants be treated with such suspicion? If it were truly the king's will, they would never ignore a royal command. Even Solomon would have humbly submitted to whoever David chose, without ever going against his wishes. Therefore, the very fact that they are suspected and kept away proves beyond a doubt that Adonijah is acting entirely on his own authority [מלבי״ם].
