The process of evaluating the sons continues as Jesse brings them before the prophet one by one. He calls his second son, Abinadab, forward only after realizing that his firstborn, Eliab, has not been selected for the role [מלבי״ם].

It remains uncertain whether Jesse actually understands the true purpose behind this gathering and the careful inspection of his boys. Samuel may have framed the event simply as a search for an assistant to help with the sacrificial offerings. During this period in history, sacrifices were permitted in various locations, and individuals did not need to be descendants of Aaron the priest to assist in the service. As Abinadab steps forward, Samuel determines that God has not chosen this son either [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
