The presentation of Jesse's sons continues as the next candidate steps forward for divine review. Jesse brings forward his third son, Shammah. Throughout other biblical accounts, such as the books of Samuel and Chronicles, this specific son is also referred to by the names Shimea or Shimah [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אברבנאל וביאור שטיינזלץ].
As Shammah passes by, Samuel announces that God has not chosen him either. The prophet arrives at this conclusion not through a direct rejection, but rather through silence. Samuel relies on a prior instruction where God promised to explicitly identify the chosen individual. Because no divine voice speaks up during Shammah's presentation, Samuel knows with absolute certainty that this son is not destined for the throne [רד״ק].
