שמואל א, פרק ט״ז, פסוק י״ח

I Samuel 16:18Sefaria

When a young man is recommended to join the royal court, the profile presented is rarely as multi-dimensional and exceptional as David's. The detailed list of his qualities is meant to show that he is not simply a talented artist whose only strength lies in his music. Instead, he is an extraordinary individual worthy of joining the king's inner circle for a variety of reasons. The primary approach among commentators is that these traits are listed to prove his absolute suitability for the palace, going far beyond the initial request to find someone who can merely play an instrument.

However, another perspective identifies a hidden, malicious motive behind this glowing recommendation. [רש״י] identifies the specific speaker in the court as Doeg the Edomite, explaining that his true intention in offering such exaggerated praise was to cast an evil eye and spark King Saul's jealousy. Expanding on this, [חומת אנך] notes that emphasizing God's presence with David was a calculated hint that David was the primary, permanent king whose legal rulings were universally accepted. This stood in sharp contrast to Saul, who was humble but did not achieve such standing, a comparison purposefully designed to cause the king distress and envy.

The commentators highlight the surprising contrast among the different qualities that make up David's personality. [מלבי״ם] and [אלשיך] point out that David breaks the usual stereotypes. Typically, poets and musicians tend to be people of imagination and emotion who are physically weak, lack practical intellect, and are sometimes drawn after physical desires due to their good looks. David, by contrast, miraculously combines artistry, physical bravery, practical wisdom, and the fear of God.

His mastery of music directly answers the king's immediate need for comfort [רד״ק]. Yet, beyond mere technical skill, his playing is meant to draw down an abundance of holiness to drive away the impure and evil spirit, since impurity naturally flees from holiness [אלשיך]. Furthermore, he possesses immense physical courage and strength [רלב״ג, רד״ק]. On a spiritual level, this bravery translates to a fierce dedication to fulfilling the Commandments, transforming him into a spiritual force akin to an army of angels [אלשיך].

He is also highly experienced in military strategy and battlefield tactics [רלב״ג, רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Off the battlefield, he is a man of profound insight who can deduce one concept from another [מצודת ציון]. He measures his words with judgment [רלב״ג] and knows how to offer sound advice [רד״ק]. This deep understanding extends to his precise knowledge of Torah and Jewish law [אלשיך].

Physically, he has a beautiful appearance and an impressive physique [רד״ק]. This is a particularly rare combination, as profound wisdom does not usually reside in such an attractive physical vessel [חומת אנך]. Above all, God accompanies him, ensuring success in all his endeavors [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק]. This divine success brings blessing to his master and aids in removing the harmful spirit [רלב״ג]. Despite his physical beauty, he remains deeply respectful of God and stays far from evil [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this divine backing signifies that Jewish law is always established according to his rulings in every situation [חומת אנך].
