שמואל א, פרק ט״ז, פסוק י״ז

I Samuel 16:17Sefaria

Facing deep mental anguish, King Saul seeks a unique remedy to ease his troubled mind through the power of music. He directs his servants to actively search out and carefully select the right musician for the task [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The king stresses that this cannot be an ordinary citizen; the chosen individual must be a person of dignity and honor, fully worthy of standing in the royal court and serving the king directly [מלבי״ם].

Saul specifically asks for someone who plays exceptionally well, rather than someone who merely knows how to hold an instrument. On a basic level, this refers to a musician capable of producing beautiful and skillful melodies [מצודת דוד]. Yet, the deliberate phrasing points to a search for something much deeper than technical ability. One perspective suggests that Saul was looking for an artist of true stature, someone possessing profound musical wisdom and refined taste. He needed a wise and poetic individual who could compose original songs and melodies powerful enough to awaken and heal the human spirit [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective focuses on the spiritual nature of the music itself. Because music can sometimes be used to encourage wildness or negative behavior, Saul required a musician who was deeply connected to God. By living a life attached to God, this musician's melodies would bring forth holiness and goodness, creating a spiritual atmosphere pure enough to drive away the dark spirit tormenting the king [אלשיך].
