שמואל א, פרק ט״ז, פסוק ט״ו

I Samuel 16:15Sefaria

King Saul's servants observe their leader in deep distress, recognizing that a terrifying evil spirit from God is tormenting him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This affliction is exceptionally powerful, representing a severe force sent directly by God [מצודת דוד]. Mentally and physically, this manifests as profound sadness and dark moods. Saul is consumed by constant anxiety over his punishment and the impending loss of his kingdom. This relentless worry takes a physical toll, distorting his imagination and plunging him into despair [מלבי״ם].

Yet, the servants understand that the root of his suffering is deeply spiritual. The troubling spirit has taken hold only because the spirit of God has departed from the king. His current state of suffering stands in sharp contrast to his past, when he was filled with divine inspiration [אלשיך].

To heal the king, the servants propose a remedy that addresses both his mind and his soul. On a psychological level, the soothing sounds of musical instruments serve as a distraction, shifting his focus away from his sadness toward joy and bringing calm to his troubled mind [מלבי״ם]. However, they know that simple music is not enough. The situation requires a holy person to play the instruments. The music of a holy individual has the power to reawaken the spirit of God that once rested upon Saul. As holiness returns to the king, the evil spirit will naturally flee, for it cannot exist in the presence of holiness [אלשיך].
