שמואל א, פרק ו׳, פסוק כ׳

I Samuel 6:20Sefaria

The deadly impact of the Ark's holiness leaves the people of Beit Shemesh gripped by deep anxiety and a profound sense of helplessness. Their desperate cry reflects a stark realization that they are completely incapable of housing the Divine presence among them. This overwhelming dread mirrors the exact terror that had previously consumed the Philistines [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Recognizing that they do not know how to treat the Ark with the proper respect, the residents are left wondering who could possibly survive in its presence [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In their distress, the survivors question who is left to guard the Ark and carefully maintain its sanctity, especially since their greatest and most prominent leaders have already perished in the plague [מצודת דוד]. The Ark possesses an immense holiness that demands an equal level of holiness from anyone who approaches it—a strict standard the local residents realize they have failed to achieve [מלבי״ם].

Driven by this intense fear, their concern shifts to a practical dilemma: where can the Ark go, and who can take it off their hands [ביאור שטיינזלץ]? Beyond their own lack of personal holiness, the people begin to suspect that the tragedy might also be tied to their specific location. They consider the possibility that God does not want His presence to rest in their city at all. Instead, He might be demanding that the Ark be moved to a different destination, one that has been properly prepared and deemed worthy in advance to host the Divine presence [מלבי״ם].
