The Philistine advisors offer a stark warning to their people against the dangerous illusion of stubbornness, drawing a direct historical lesson from the plagues of Egypt. The very fact that the Philistines were debating what to do with the Ark of God revealed their hesitation, as they were still torn over whether to return the Ark or continue holding onto it [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Many held onto the hope that the plague ravaging their cities was merely a natural, temporary illness that would soon burn itself out and disappear on its own [מלבי״ם].

In response to this wishful thinking, the advisors challenge the people, asking why they would stubbornly repeat the past mistakes of a king who was far greater and stronger than they were [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The language the advisors use emphasizes a uniquely profound heaviness of the heart [רד״ק]. They remind the nation that Egypt and Pharaoh hardened their hearts because of a mistaken belief that God would eventually grow tired of striking them [מלבי״ם].

When reflecting on how God responded to the Egyptians, there are different understandings of the advisors' message. Some explain that God brought about absolute destruction and ruin upon Egypt [רד״ק]. Others interpret the events as a form of divine mockery, suggesting that God was simply playing with and ridiculing the Egyptians [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].

Regardless of the exact nature of the punishment, the advisors' conclusion is absolute: keeping the Ark is completely out of the question [אלשיך]. Just as the Egyptians were ultimately forced to send the Israelites away against their will, the Philistines will face the exact same end if they do not quickly return the Ark [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
