ישעיהו, פרק מ״ח, פסוק ו׳

Isaiah 48:6Sefaria

God presents the people with a profound double challenge: to recognize the precise fulfillment of past prophecies and to prepare for unprecedented future revelations. The focus shifts from bearing witness to history to uncovering mysteries that have been hidden until now.

The primary approach among commentators is to view this process as a chronological sequence. The people are asked to reflect on the prophecies and decrees they heard in the past, such as the decree against Sennacherib, and to acknowledge how these events have been fully realized before their eyes. Another perspective suggests a slightly different angle, asking the people to look closely and realize that they had already heard every detail of these events long before they actually occurred [שד״ל].

Following the fulfillment of these prophecies, God issues a clear demand. Most commentators explain that God requires the people to testify and admit that not a single word of His went unfulfilled. They are called upon to accept the undeniable truth of what they have witnessed. Conversely, this demand is also understood as a sharp rebuke. Despite seeing prophecies come true, the people continue to attribute these miracles to mere nature or false idols. Because of this stubbornness, a completely new divine action is necessary to prove the truth once and for all [מלבי״ם].

As a result, God announces that from this moment forward, the people will hear of entirely new and unusual events. These upcoming miracles, which some commentators specifically identify as the future downfall of Babylon [רד״ק, מצודת דוד], are described as closely guarded secrets. There is a general consensus that these are mysteries kept securely in God's treasuries. While He has known them since the beginning of time, they are completely new to the people. To ensure that no one can claim they already knew what was going to happen, these secrets were kept so well hidden that they were not even revealed to the prophets ahead of time [מלבי״ם].
